History of The American People, French Book in 2 Volumes by André Maurois, 1955

About the Item

Histoire du Peuple Americain (History of the American People), French book in two volumes by André Maurois from the French Academy, 1955/56. Volume I: Europe discovers America - At the crossroads - The birth of a nation. Volume II: Growing Pains - The Golden Age - World Power Author's foreword: In this history of the American people, I have sought to give readers a sketch of the development of a civilization and a political system. I believe such works are profitable, not because they provide scholars with new elements, but not because they organize in the form of a continuous and relatively straightforward narrative, numerous documents that had never been produced in French. America has had, and now more than ever, remarkable historians. I have read many of them; I extracted the essentials from their books and texts and presented the facts as clearly as possible. Of all national histories, that of the United States is the most difficult to compare and define its origins. Before the nation is formed, the narrator must describe several distinct colonies founding and evolution. So many American historians began their book on the eve of the War of Independence. I refused this facility. Many also refused to write the history of our time. I imposed this duty on myself. These are two beautiful coffee table art books. About the Author: André Maurois, pseudonym of Émile Salomon Wilhelm Herzog, born July 26, 1885 in Elbeuf and died October 9, 1967 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, is a French novelist, biographer, storyteller, and essayist. But it is in biographies that the writer excels: he devotes them, with inspired fraternity, to writers like Shelley, Byron, Victor Hugo, George Sand or Balzac, but also political figures like Disraeli and General Lyautey or scientists like Alexander Fleming. He was elected to the French Academy on June 23, 1938, in chair 26. Respected by his peers, he remained in the chair for almost thirty years. Features: Title: Histoire du Peuple Americain in two volumes. Author: André Maurois de l'Academie Francaise (French Academy). Hardcover book with leather cover and dust jacket. Language: French. Many black and white and color photographs and illustrations. 276 + 297 pages. Dimensions: 8.88 in x 11 in (22.5 x 28 cm). The first volume was published in 1955. • The Cars in Posters, French Book by Thierry Favre, 2007

L'Auto s'affiche (The Cars in Posters), French Book by Thierry Favre, 2007. Prefaced by Louis Schweitzer, this book unveils a formidable collection of graphic posters illustrating automobile history. This retrospective allows an understanding of artistic trends and the evolution of advertising while discovering manufacturers, luxury models, casual vehicles, trucks, coaches, and other racing cars. The golden age of the graphic poster began in 1880 in the railway tourism sector. The photographic poster has been successful and has dominated the market since the 1970s. The poster is related to the development of the automobile industry at the beginning of the 20th century. It expresses an advertising message but also becomes a mode of artistic expression in its own right. Thanks to the talent of artists like Pal, Mich, Vincent, Mauzan, Geo Ham, Kow, Cassandre, Savignac, and many others, the poster strikes the imagination of passers-by. It entertains, inspires dreams, and innovates. The graphic print expresses all the major artistic trends, from Art Nouveau to Art Deco. It is paradoxical to note that the woman's omnipresence in the image largely contributed to the birth of the myth of the Automobile. After World War I, the automotive landscape changed a lot. The 416 makes counted around 1910 disappeared for different reasons: non-competitiveness of assemblers, too rapid technical development, and damage correlated with the conflict. On the other hand, new brands resulting, in particular, from the formidable evolution of military aviation from 1915 to 1919 appear: Voisin, Farman, and Hotchkiss wanted to branch out from machine guns. Curiously, the big car...

  • 1925 The Memory Years, French Book by Editions Larousse, 1988

1925, Les Années-Mémoire (1925, The Memory Years), French book by Editions Larousse, 1988. Relive the year 1925 as if you were there. This volume will make you relive, with emotion, the facts and events of the interwar period. Because that year, in France, we hear everywhere humming, "When We Are Two, It's Not The Same Thing" by Maurice Chevalier. Street music and music hall contribute to a good mood. And yet, the economic situation is hardly smiling, and the French government knows many setbacks: in April, Edouard Herriot yields his place as president of the Council to Paul Painlevé, and in October, Aristide Briand, in his turn, replaces it. Inflation in Germany is still rife, and the mark value is almost zero. 1925 is also rich in artistic and sporting events. American crews completed the first circumnavigation of the globe by plane in 175 days. French actor Michel Simon is first seen in Marcel L'Herbier's film "Feu Mathias Pascal." Classical music is not to be outdone, Maurice Ravel composes Tzigane, and Honegger triumphs with his King David. A new phenomenon, sport fascinates more and more French people and attracts many followers. Our tennis players excel at Wimbledon while the All Blacks come to give us a rugby lesson. In Monaco, we happily celebrate Louis II...
