The Industrial Heritage of the United States French Book by Louis Bergeron, 2000

About the Item

Le Patrimoine Industriel des Etats-Unis (The Industrial Heritage of The United-States), French book by Louis Bergeron and Maria Teresa Maiullari-Pontois, 2000. Since the creation of the United States more than two centuries ago, the American dream, linked to the myths of conquest and entrepreneurship, has remained alive, and even when, as here, it is a matter of remains of large-scale industrialization, the fascination with excess and audacity remains. This book takes you on an impressive journey across American industrial heritage, though it's not an exhaustive inventory, from the water mills of New England to the enormous steel complexes of Pennsylvania and the automobile factories of Detroit, passing through the mining deposits of Alaska and the port facilities of Buffalo or New York. The affirmation of American industrial power has never been so visible as in these gigantic constructions. Today, as numerous buildings are abandoned, the question of their preservation and rehabilitation arises. The United States is also a country where the immensity of the distances to be covered posed particular problems for engineers and manufacturers. As a result, means of communication (bridges, canals, railways, and port facilities) occupy a special place in the American imagination, and the reader will discover an astonishing catalog of bridges from different eras and legendary stations. Warehouses, silos, and industrial buildings were also an opportunity for American architects, including the famous Albert Kahn, to find solutions that were both functional and brought a new aesthetic to constraints of a unique magnitude than at the time world. Thanks to photographs from the American Inventory Service and the photographic campaigns of four professional artists (Joseph Elliott, Jet Lowe, Sandy Noyes, and Gerald Weinstein), this work offers a different reading of American history over the last three centuries. Through the magnifying mirror effect of this book, the question of the future of European industrial buildings is resurfacing. This is a beautiful coffee table art book. 1925, Les Années-Mémoire (1925, The Memory Years), French book by Editions Larousse, 1988. Relive the year 1925 as if you were there. This volume will make you relive, with emotion, the facts and events of the interwar period. Because that year, in France, we hear everywhere humming, "When We Are Two, It's Not The Same Thing" by Maurice Chevalier. Street music and music hall contribute to a good mood. And yet, the economic situation is hardly smiling, and the French government knows many setbacks: in April, Edouard Herriot yields his place as president of the Council to Paul Painlevé, and in October, Aristide Briand, in his turn, replaces it. Inflation in Germany is still rife, and the mark value is almost zero. 1925 is also rich in artistic and sporting events. American crews completed the first circumnavigation of the globe by plane in 175 days. French actor Michel Simon is first seen in Marcel L'Herbier's film "Feu Mathias Pascal." Classical music is not to be outdone, Maurice Ravel composes Tzigane, and Honegger triumphs with his King David. A new phenomenon, sport fascinates more and more French people and attracts many followers. Our tennis players excel at Wimbledon while the All Blacks come to give us a rugby lesson. In Monaco, we happily celebrate Louis II...
