The United States 1898 to 1933, French Book by Y.H. Nouailhat, 1973

About the Item

Les Etats-Unis 1898 - 1933 L'Avenement d'une Puissance Mondiale (The United States 1898 - 1933 - The Advent of a World Power), by Y. H. Nouailhat, 1973. 1898 saw the appearance on the world scene of a new power, the United States, until then locked in its isolation. Their disinterest in international politics ended with the war they declared against Spain. Henceforth, their strength would affect world politics. After the great crisis of the Civil War, the industry took off remarkably, and McKinley's election symbolized in some way the industry's victory over agriculture. The spirit of risk, the desire for quick gains, and the taste for speculation activated this boom under the impetus of the great captains of industry, such as Rockefeller, Carnegie, and Morgan. Trusts and holding companies appear. The Great War of 1914, in which, after much hesitation, the United States intervened, made them aware of their international mission. This is the birth of Americanism. Despite social conflicts, the black problem, and the terrible period of prohibition, in 1926, the United States was at the height of its power. Regrettably, excessive speculation and overproduction resulted in the most significant economic downturn in the history of the United States. It's the end of the new era. The book is filled with many period photographs and caricatures, some of which may be deemed violent and aggressive but effectively convey the opinion and personality of a bold nation that courageously laid the groundwork for a new and innovative society. This is a beautiful coffee table art book. About the Author: Nouailhat, Yves-Henri (1935-), Historian, a specialist in the history of the United States. • 1925 The Memory Years, French Book by Editions Larousse, 1988
    By Modern History

1925, Les Années-Mémoire (1925, The Memory Years), French book by Editions Larousse, 1988. Relive the year 1925 as if you were there. This volume will make you relive, with emotion, the facts and events of the interwar period. Because that year, in France, we hear everywhere humming, "When We Are Two, It's Not The Same Thing" by Maurice Chevalier. Street music and music hall contribute to a good mood. And yet, the economic situation is hardly smiling, and the French government knows many setbacks: in April, Edouard Herriot yields his place as president of the Council to Paul Painlevé, and in October, Aristide Briand, in his turn, replaces it. Inflation in Germany is still rife, and the mark value is almost zero. 1925 is also rich in artistic and sporting events. American crews completed the first circumnavigation of the globe by plane in 175 days. French actor Michel Simon is first seen in Marcel L'Herbier's film "Feu Mathias Pascal." Classical music is not to be outdone, Maurice Ravel composes Tzigane, and Honegger triumphs with his King David. A new phenomenon, sport fascinates more and more French people and attracts many followers. Our tennis players excel at Wimbledon while the All Blacks come to give us a rugby lesson. In Monaco, we happily celebrate Louis II...

  • The Cars in Posters, French Book by Thierry Favre, 2007
    By Modern History
    Located in Atlanta, GA
L'Auto s'affiche (The Cars in Posters), French Book by Thierry Favre, 2007. Prefaced by Louis Schweitzer, this book unveils a formidable collection of graphic posters illustrating automobile history. This retrospective allows an understanding of artistic trends and the evolution of advertising while discovering manufacturers, luxury models, casual vehicles, trucks, coaches, and other racing cars. The golden age of the graphic poster began in 1880 in the railway tourism sector. The photographic poster has been successful and has dominated the market since the 1970s. The poster is related to the development of the automobile industry at the beginning of the 20th century. It expresses an advertising message but also becomes a mode of artistic expression in its own right. Thanks to the talent of artists like Pal, Mich, Vincent, Mauzan, Geo Ham, Kow, Cassandre, Savignac, and many others, the poster strikes the imagination of passers-by. It entertains, inspires dreams, and innovates. The graphic print expresses all the major artistic trends, from Art Nouveau to Art Deco. It is paradoxical to note that the woman's omnipresence in the image largely contributed to the birth of the myth of the Automobile. After World War I, the automotive landscape changed a lot. The 416 makes counted around 1910 disappeared for different reasons: non-competitiveness of assemblers, too rapid technical development, and damage correlated with the conflict. On the other hand, new brands resulting, in particular, from the formidable evolution of military aviation from 1915 to 1919 appear: Voisin, Farman, and Hotchkiss wanted to branch out from machine guns. Curiously, the big car...

1812 "United States of Nth America -- Carte des Etats-Unis De L'Amerique Septentrionale" Two-Sheet Map by Tardieu This attractive map, published in Paris in 1812, is one of the most rare large format maps from the period. Additionally, Ellicott’s plan for the City of Washington D.C. is included at the top right and an illustration of Niagara Falls is shown at the bottom right with a description in both French and English. This extremely detailed map not only depicts the mountainous regions of the southeastern U.S., but also includes names of regions, rivers, and towns. Based on the first state of Arrowsmith’s 4-sheet map of the United States, this map is completely engraved by Tardieu in Paris and showcases high quality engravings. This detailed map of the recently independent United States includes one of the largest and earliest examples of the Ellicott plan of Washington DC.
