About the Item

Molière (Jean-Baptiste Poquelin), ed. Georges Monval La Comtesse d'Escarbagnas Paris: Librairie des Bibliophiles, 1895. L. Leloir / Champollion. Limited Edition. 16mo., 7 x4 5/8 (175 x 116 mm). pp. (4), XV, (1), 48. One of only 20 copies on Japon with three states of the frontispiece engraving by Champollion after L. Leloir; tissue guards; title printed in red and black. Contemporary polished red calf with gold fillets, gilt title and decorations on the spine, marbled endpapers; uncut, original wrappers bound in, t.e.g. Vol. 27 of 30 in the series Les Pièces de Molière. [Vicaire V, p.961; Carteret IV, p.286]. A beautifully-bound edition of Molière's 1671 play which had been commissioned by Louis XIV in honor of his brother Phillippe d'Orléan's new wife, Élisabeth-Charlotte du Palatinat and performed several times in front of the court in December 1671 with music by Marc-Antoine Charpentier. The lovely frontispiece image, present in three states in this very special edition on Japon paper, was engraved by the French artist Eugène-André Champollion (1848 – 1901). Léopold Carteret, in his fundamental work "Le trésor du bibliophile romantique et moderne", 1801-1875 states that this is a "Beautiful limited edition with illustrations by an artist who has unfortunately not published enough."
