About the Item
Small format catalog of Ladislav Sutnar’s first one-man exhibition in the United States, held from January 10-February 28, 1947 at New York City’s A-D Gallery. Sponsored by The Composing Room, the influential type shop that promoted avant-garde graphic design and the New Typography through their journals and exhibitions. 8vo (8” x 5.5”), pictorial French-folded wrappers, 16 pages with two-color illustrations. Catalog design by Sutnar. Features Sutnar’s now-iconic work in magazine covers, book jackets, catalog and packaging design, advertisements, and exhibition and product designs for Czech and American clients including Zijeme, Druzstevni prace, Ciba Pharmeceuticals, F.W. Dodge Corporation, Fortune Magazine, and New York’s 1939 World’s Fair. With an introduction by Cliff S. Eriksen that apprehends Sutnar’s “happy combination of graphic imagination with the technical precision required by industry.”
