This beautiful catalogue is published in conjunction with the exhibition Larry Johnson held by the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. Following in the tradition of conducting surveys of mid-career artists at the Hammer, this elegant survey of Johnson’s works was born.
Johnson’s name has flown low on the radar, despite his widespread power of inspiration among his contemporaries. A true “artist's artist”, Johnson lived the down-and-out life in LA and the themes of his works mirrored it closely. Celebrity craze, class division, camp and lust, drug and death are the constituting pillars of Johnson’s works. This monograph charts the development of Johnson’s signature cartoonish illustration style. Absorbing early influence from Douglas Huebler, finding comradeship with Richard Prince, and inserting himself among the leagues of Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns, this monograph gives Johnson his due in his artistic achievement and his pervading influence on a generation of artists.
