Presented in 3/4 red Moroccan leather and red cloth boards with gilt titles, tooling, and raised bands to the spine. Presented is a five-volume, numbered edition of William Hazlitt’s The Life of Napoleon. Hazlitt originally published his The Life of Napoleon Buonaparte in four volumes, 1828 to 1830. This is the Empire Edition, numbered 80 of 425 sets and published in New York by the Grolier Society, circa 1900. This is a beautifully bound and illustrated biography of Napoleon Bonaparte and the product of Hazlitt’s lifetime of devoted study and fascination with Napoleon. Napoleon Bonaparte rose to prominence during the French Revolution and became the emperor of France in 1804 after the fall of the French monarchy in 1793. This multi-volume biography details his life, both personal and professional, from his youth in the La Fere regiment, to his rise to Emperor, ending with his death in exile. William Hazlitt was an English writer, celebrated for his humanistic essays and literary criticism, as well as his influence as a social commentator and philosopher. Hazlitt was born in 1778, just two years after the American Declaration of Independence, and died in 1830. His life therefore “spans a vivid epoch. Its core event is the French Revolution, which was Hazlitt's inspiration and guiding star”(Grayling). Hazlitt witnessed the rise and fall of Napoleon, whom he admired for many years. When Sir Walter Scott’s 1827 biography of Napoleon was published, Hazlitt was determined to write his own, to counteract the opinions that Napoleon was a man of overweening ambition and self-blinding egotism. Hazlitt was “convinced that Napoleon was the greatest man of his era, the apostle of freedom, a born leader of men in the old heroic mold; he had thrilled to his triumphs over 'legitimacy' and suffered real anguish at his downfall" (Wardle). Hazlitt began research for his book in Paris in August of 1826. The first two volumes of his Napoleon biography appeared in 1828, only to have its publisher fail soon thereafter. Hazlitt managed to complete writing The Life of Napoleon Buonaparte shortly before his death in 1830, but did not live to see it published in its entirety. The last two volumes were published posthumously in 1830. CONDITION: Good condition overall, considering age and past use. Octavo, five volume set. Bound in 3/4 red Moroccan leather with red cloth boards, ruled in gilt, with raised bands, gilt titles, and gilt tooling to spines. Top edges gilt. Matching marbled endpapers. Illustrated with engraved plates from various portraits and etchings, including colored frontispieces in each volume. Empire Edition, no. 80 of 425 sets, as indicated on the limitation page. Edges of spines show some rubbing, gilt edges lightly faded. Inside pages are lightly toned but healthy.
