About the Item

One of the most unusual books that I have come across is this extremley rare edition from 1673 of Thomas Bartholin or Bartholini's masterpiece Acta Medica & Philosophiae Hafniensia published by Peter Haubold of Copenhagen. It contains two years of his journals and is one of the earliest texts to deal with medical botanical philosophical and paranormal experiences. There are so many plates some containing fantastical creatures and a article which I learned on the internet on spontaneous combustion. I really have no way of valuing this book as there are no extant exmaples for sale. The only remaining texts seem to be in museum collections. It came out of a remarkable doctor's estate and evene though I can't read it the plates are magnificent. The condition is as you see it. It has someone's name on the inner cover and lots of browning and spotting. The back cover mentions that there should be 376 pages while the book only contains 368, so a few last pages are missing as can be seen in the area near the inner spine. The binding is original I believe and has a small sticker with the number 85 on the spine above the title. The frontispiece has a tear upper right, pictured. I counted at least 40+ illustrations and I did not go page by page. Some have some minor rips from handling. It is 6.5 x 7.75 iches and slighly over 2 inches thick. As I mentioned the book is in well used contition but given it's age it's pretty remarkable it's in the original binder. Again, I can find no examples of this early text only references to it and one exampe of a later 1680 edition that sols. I believe it is quite rare and would like to see it go into the proper collector's hand's. I will gladly answer any and all questions as I am not a specialist rare book dealer and have tried to detail the book as best I can.

As described, some missing pages at the end. Most of the pages have foxing and quite a few some tears most small. Binding is original and loose at the back. Some roughness to binders edges.
