About the Item

Richard Henry Dana - Two Years Before the Mast. A Personal Narrative of Life at Sea. First Edition, Harper & Brothers N.Y. 1840. A very important classic of American literature. The book records Dana's visit aboard the brig The Pilgrim to California in 1835 and 1836, and includes an account of the early hide trade of California. It was effectively the first reliable description of the new State of California before the 1849 Gold Rush with early descriptions of the major settlements including San Francisco and San Diego where he met “a considerable group of native Hawaiian”. A friend and literary contemporary of Herman Melville, Dana’s descriptions of his voyages were influential to the writing of Moby Dick. Finished in full antique sprinkled calf leather with gilt decorative tooling and burgundy morocco labels with hand made marbled endpapers. Gilt edges. Asprey London: With accompanying letter and description. Some wear to hinges. Owners inscription to title page otherwise very good. This copy can be identified as the true first issue of the first edition as it contains a perfect “i” above the word in on the copyright page, the second issue contained no dot above the letter.
