About the Item
Muir, John. The Yosemite. New York: The Century Publishing Company, 1912. First Edition. In original green cloth boards with pictorial and gilt stamped front board, gilt titles to the spine. Illustrated with 32 plates and three fold-out maps. Presented with a new archival slipcase.
This first edition printing of The Yosemite by John Muir was published in New York in 1912 by The Century Publishing Company. In the book, Muir recounts his adventures and experiences traveling through the Yosemite Valley's spectacular scenery. The book is presented in its original green cloth boards, with the pictorial front board and spine stamped in gold, lavender, purple, and black. It is profusely illustrated, with 32 full-page plates from photographs by Huber, Taber, Le Conte, and the Pillsbury Picture Co., and three extensive fold-out maps.
The Yosemite was written at the request of Muir's friend and fellow conservationist Robert Underwood Johnson, who also served as editor-in-chief of The Century Publishing Company. Intended as a guidebook for Yosemite travelers, Muir assembled and rewrote material from his previously published works on the National Park, in order to tell readers all about the “marvelous wonderland." The result is a detailed account of his exploration of Yosemite Valley, with a thorough celebration of its stunning vistas and peaks, diverse wildlife and flora, and all of the geographic and geologic marvels that it contains.
Also included is a history of Yosemite Valley, its beginnings as a glacial valley, as well as biographical sketches of two pioneer Yosemite residents, James C. Lamon and Galen Clark. Muir concludes the book with an essay on Hetch Hetchy Valley, urging readers to preserve the "Tuolumne Yosemite."
The three fold-out maps are "Administrative Map of Yosemite National Park, California. Topography by R. B. Marshall and A. H. Sylvester Surveyed in 1893-94, 1896, 1898-99, and 1905...Edition of April 1910," "Travel-Guide Map of the Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park, California...After Topographic Map of Yosemite Valley, Mariposa County, California, by the U.S. Geological Survey" and "Travel-Guide Map of the Yosemite National Park, California...After Topographic Sheet of Administrative Map of Yosemite National Park by U.S. Geological Survey."
Scottish-American John Muir was commonly known as “John of the Mountains” or “Father of the National Parks” for the work he did to help protect these preserved lands. As a wilderness explorer, he is renowned for his exciting adventures in California's Sierra Nevada, among Alaska's glaciers, and worldwide travels in search of nature's beauty. As a writer, he taught the public the importance of experiencing and protecting our natural lands. His writings contributed greatly to the creation of Yosemite, Sequoia, Mount Rainier, Petrified Forest, and Grand Canyon National Parks.
In 1892, John Muir and other supporters formed the Sierra Club "to make the mountains glad." The Sierra Club still operates today in the United States as a conservation-based environmental organization. As a result of Muir’s urging, President Theodore Roosevelt passed many pioneering conservation programs, including establishing the first national monument under the Antiquities Act in 1906, which protected Devils Tower, a well-known geological formation in Crook County, Wyoming. Before President Roosevelt left office in 1909 he had signed proclamations establishing eighteen national monuments. Six were created primarily to preserve historic and prehistoric structures, twelve were created primarily to preserve "other objects . . . of scientific interest”.

Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, First Edition, First Printing, in Original DJ, 1961
By Joseph Heller
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Heller, Joseph. Catch-22. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1961. First edition, first printing. Octavo. In original blue cloth boards, stamped in white. In the original unclipped dust jacket. Presented with a new archival ¼ leather and cloth clamshell.
Presented is the first edition, first printing of Joseph Heller’s Catch-22. Catch-22 was published by Simon and Schuster, in October of 1961. This book is presented in the original publisher’s blue cloth boards, titled and embossed in white, and the original, unclipped dust-jacket. The Simon and Schuster “A Note to the Reader” postcard is laid in. The book comes with a new, archival ¼ leather and cloth clamshell.
Catch-22 was Joseph Heller’s first novel and his most acclaimed work. Set during World War II, the novel uses a unique, non-chronological third-person narration, mainly focusing on the life of a B-25 bombardier in the U.S. Army, Captain John Yossarian, and his attempts to avoid bombing runs. Both the title and plot device, “Catch-22” refers to an Air Forces regulation which asserts that a man is considered insane if he willingly agrees to fly dangerous combat missions, but that if he makes the formal request to be relieved of such missions, the very act of making the request proves that he is sane and therefore ineligible to be relieved." By the end of the novel, the phrase is invoked as the explanation for many unreasonable restrictions. “Catch-22” has since entered the English lexicon.
Heller spent eight years writing "Catch-22," and used his own war experiences as inspiration for the novel. From 1942 to 1945, Heller served as a combat bombardier in the Twelfth Air Force and was stationed on the Island of Corsica. Upon publication, the book was not an immediate bestseller, but did elicit glowing reviews from some. “Wildly original, brilliantly comic, brutally gruesome, it is a dazzling performance that will probably outrage nearly as many readers as it delights. In any case, it is one of the most startling first novels of the year and it may make its author famous” (Orville Prescott, New York Times).
It became a publishing sensation thanks to the 1962 paperback edition, which set record sales and benefitted from the national debate surrounding the Vietnam War. In the decades since, it has inspired a feature film, a miniseries, a 50-character stage play, and sold more than 10 million...
