A Bronze Compact Box by French Art Jeweler Line Vautrin

About the Item

A poudrier in bronze by Parisian art jeweler Line Vautrin (1913-1997) circa 1945, the name of this lovely compact box is called "Entrelacs et Noeuds" (interlaces and knots), which reflects the design on the cover. Ten twisted bronze laces overflows on the subtly hammered bronze surface and they interlock five inset moonstones in an petal-like pattern that converts in the center. Mirror and fabric insulator are both intact inside. The box is stamped "Line Vautrin" and "Made in France" on the back. Semi-precious or precious stones were not commonly used in Line Vautrin's work. The moonstones make this piece rather special, suggesting perhaps a custom order. For a similar box with the silver inlay instead of the moonstones, see Christie's Paris auction: Un Souhait a traverse Paris - Collection Marie-Laure Bonnaud-Vatrin, oeuvres choisies de Line Vautrin. May 20th, 2015 lot 365.
