Dieter Rams No. 63 "RT20" in lacquered steel and beech Veneer made in 1961.The layout of the RT 20 control panel follows that of the earlier SK Phonosuper. This tabletop radio's turntable element has been substituted with a circular slotted speaker grill. Although the RT 20 employs a similar combination of pale wooden casing and painted metal finish as the earlier SK Phonosuper, its tone is inclined towards the industrial. Moreover, the design is reduced to such an extent that it consists largely of the rational surface of its control panel, meaning that it does not take anything away from its function.
Although less well-known than either the SK Phonosuper or TS 45, the balance of natural warmth and technological austerity achieved by Rams in RT 20, sets it apart as one of his greatest works.
