Handmade Miniature Travelling Chess Set Game walnut Inlaid box, circa 1920

About the Item

This is a good quality handmade Miniature or travelling wood chess set game of 32 pieces in its own inlaid hardwood box, which we date to the early 20th century, circa 1920. This piece is all handmade. The chess set is complete with 32 wood pieces having pegged bases. The jointed box is handmade of hardwood, possibly walnut with line inlays of a lighter wood to the top and the base. The lid is a good fit to the base and the box has brass hinges and a brass fastener to keep the lid securely closed. The inside of the lid has a fabric pad to keep the chess pieces in position when the lid is closed. Overall a quality handmade, complete, travelling chess set. Chess Set Additional Details: The dimensions of 5 inches wide by 7 inches long are the box when closed. The board when open is nominally 10 inches by 7 inches. Playing pieces can be left in position when the lid is closed which is useful if you cannot finish the game in one session. All pieces are nominally the same height of about 2cm excluding the spigot (peg) part that fits into the holes.

This is a high quality large Games Compendium, complete with many individual games in its original hardwood storage box with a hinged lid. All the pieces are well made and complete. The box is very well made of a jointed hardwood, possibly red walnut and is a high quality piece in its own right. The box has developed a lovely color and patination from use and wear.
