About the Item
A beautiful Late Baroque Box used for Chess/Backgammon and Nine Men’s Morris Game pieces. Rich interior and exterior decorated with different types of wood, including olive, walnut and birch. Late 17th Century/Early 18th Century.
This charming games box features intarsia of wood veneer in several different types wood. The top of the box is a chess board decorated with three types of wood. The opposite side of the box is a board for Nine Men's Morris, an antique playing game (later called cowboy checkers in America), consisting of a diamond pattern made up of interlocking diamond patterns, also made from wood veneer. Inside the box is inlayed with several intarsia details, e.g. one in the form of a compass rose made of contrasting wood types. The inside is used for storage of pieces and as a Backgammon board.
Lockable with small iron latch. Wear consistent with age and use.
