King Edward V111 Royal Commemorative Pottery Beaker, May 12th 1937

About the Item

This is a royal commemorative earthenware (pottery) beaker celebrating the planned coronation of King Edward V111th on May 12th 1937. The tapering beaker or cup would have been made by one of the many Staffordshire potteries in England during the year of 1936 to celebrate the planned coronation of 1937 that never took place. ( see below) The beaker or cup is decorated with a colour transfer printed scene of the Kings head with a crown above and English flags either side. The rim of the beaker is finished in silver gilt. The beaker is unmarked to the base. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edward V111 Edward VIII, later known as the Duke of Windsor, was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Empire, and Emperor of India, from 20 January 1936 until his abdication in December of the same year. The coronation of King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom was due to take place at Westminster Abbey on 12 May 1937. Preparations had already begun and souvenirs like this one, were on sale when Edward VIII abdicated on 11 December 1936. Edward abdicated (resigned) from the throne, because he wanted to marry the American woman Wallis Simpson. Simpson had been married twice before. As King, he was Head of the Church of England, and the Church did not support divorce. After abdicating as king, he was known as His Royal Highness the Duke of Windsor. His wife was not allowed to be called "Her Royal Highness. .
