Seascape with Clippership by George Howell Gay (American: 1858 - 1931), ca 1890
Located in Nantucket, MA
Seascape with Clippership by George Howell Gay (American: 1858 - 1931), circa 1890, an oil on canvas bow view of a clippership under full sail, running with stun'sls and skysails set, on lively sea under blue cloudy sky, with a second square-rigger visible in the background, signed in the lower right, and titled on the reverse "Clipper Ship Before the Wind." A beautiful and dramatic painting with a cool, brisk feel. The painting is in fine condition, with one small patch along the upper margin and a tiny spot of corresponding inpainting. Measures:24 in H x 20 in W Framed: 29 in H x 25 in W George Howell Gay was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and educated in Chicago under Paul Brown and Henry Elkins, and in 1889 moved to Bronxville, New York. He worked in all media, but was especially fond of watercolor, which allowed him to capture the transparency of the ocean and the luminous qualities of sunlight and clouds. Gay worked along the Northeastern coast from Rhode Island to Maine, but also painted summer and winter landscapes throughout New England. Gay’s seascapes were exhibited at the Boston Art...

The reverse is mounted with an oval polychrome enamel plaque representing a blue Royal Navy ensign flying triumphant above the flags of France and Spain superimposed with an anchor and laurel wreath against a red background within four navy blue enamel panels with the gilt inscription: Glory to the Souls of the Brave, a line from The Battle of the Baltic written in 1801 by Scottish poet Thomas Campbell (1777-1844) to commemorate Nelson’s victory at the Battle of Copenhagen. Cameo with incised signature Tassie F. 1805 English, 1805 John Ray and James Montague succeeded to the celebrated enamelling and goldsmithing firm of James Morisset (1738-1815) in 1800. Brass nautical log or solcometer in the shape of a speargun, signed T. Walker's 1870
Located in Milan, IT
Log o solcometro contamiglia nautico in ottone a forma di harpoon, signed T. Walker's Patent Harpoon Ship Log A 1 London , from the second half of the 1800s. It is an ancient nautical instrument, very rare and with a characteristic shape, which measured the distance and speed of a ship. Good condition replaced flap perfectly working and mounted on custom-made brass wood base. Measurements length cm 54 - 21.2 in, propeller diameter cm 13 - 5.1 in. The last photo is the gift box. In past centuries, the attempt to measure the speed of ships was severely hampered mainly by the 'unavailability of time-measuring instruments of sufficient accuracy: by throwing a piece of wood overboard from the bow of a ship and measuring the time it took to reach the stern, it was possible to obtain some information about the speed of the ship itself, but with many errors and inaccuracies. The principle of the mechanical solcometer was explained to the Royal Society in 1699 by Robert Hooke, but the first model produced for commercial use was not patented until 1802 by Edward Massey...
