A Victorian framed print of "PADDLE WHEELS & SCREW PROPELLERS" by Day and Son, Lithographers to the Queen. Plate from The Modern System of Naval Architecture (John Scott Russell, 1864). The bottom of the print is inscribed: LONDON. PUBLISHED JANY 1ST 1864, BY DAY & SON, LITHOGRAPHERS TO THE QUEEN John Scott Russell FRSE FRS FRSA (1808-1882) was a Scottish civil engineer, naval architect and shipbuilder who built the SS Great Eastern in collaboration with Isambard Kingdom Brunel. He made the discovery of the wave of translation that gave birth to the modern study of solitons, and developed the wave-line system of ship construction. The firm of William Day, later Day & Son, was established in 1823. In 1837 the firm was granted the status of ‘Lithographers to Queen Victoria and to the Queen Dowager, Queen Adelaide.
