Island Whimsy Designing a Paradise by the Sea
Located in New York, NY
Author Celerie Kemble A house by the sea should be a house of dreams. Where windows and doors are thrown open to the ocean, and gusts of cool, salty air turn us all into kids again--buoyant and joyful. Spending childhood days on the beach and in the magical, romantic chaos of her family's rambling house internationally renowned interior designer Celerie Kemble has a deep-rooted connection to the sun and surf. However, in the summer of 2004, Kemble laid eyes on a wild swath of jungle in the Dominican Republic next to minty-blue water and an endless stretch of golden sand, she fell madly in love. Over many years, she designed a home away from home there, an island retreat--a clubhouse and a grouping of family homes and guesthouses--suffused with light and air, full of indoor and outdoor rooms for relaxation. In her latest book, Island Whimsy, Kemble recounts the deeply personal and creative journey of designing Playa Grande and bringing this labor of love to life. The chapters of this book are organized around the different ways Kemble sought to braid her family's story into the larger landscape of Playa Grande and to provide inspiration, joy, and respite to all who come. "Fantasy" looks at the way she used whimsical, dreamlike elements--from the latticework cabanas by the pool to the lamb statues...

Printed in North Korea The Art of Everyday Life in the DPRK
Located in New York City, NY
Never-before-seen North Korea - a rare glimpse into the country behind the politics and the creativity behind the propaganda This incredible collection of prints dating from the 1950s to the twenty-first century is the only one of its kind in or outside North Korea. Depicting the everyday lives of the country's train conductors, steelworkers, weavers, farmers, scientists, and fishermen, these unique lino-cut and woodblock prints are a fascinating way to explore the culture of this still virtually unknown country. Together, they are an unparalleled testament to the talent of North Korea's artists and the unique social, cultural, and political conditions in which they work. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Nicholas Bonner studied landscape architecture in the UK. During a study trip to China in 1993 he visited North Korea, and subsequently set up Beijing-based Koryo Tours, specializing in tourism to the DPRK. Since 2001, Bonner has produced three documentaries and a feature film on North Korea. He is the author of Phaidon's bestselling Made in North Korea.

Out East Houses and Gardens of the Hamptons Book by Jennifer Ash Rudick
Located in New York, NY
Out East Houses and Gardens of the Hamptons By: Jennifer Ash Rudick Photographs by Tria Giovan Cool breezes, miles of pristine beaches, and vast, open farmland have long attracted visitors to Long Island’s South Fork, known worldwide as “The Hamptons.” Residents in picturesque seaside communities from Southampton to Montauk are calling upon world-class designers to fine-tune their visions, giving rise to a fresh design vernacular: homes that are testaments to what can be achieved when inspired by the natural beauty of a unique locale—and when imagination is one’s only limitation. Out East captures the enduring appeal of shingled houses, modernist oceanfront designs, artists’ compounds, and Montauk surf shacks...

Early 18th Century Italian Compass, Pierre de Baillou, Milan
By Pierre de Baillou
Located in Milano, IT
Compass Pierre de Baillou Milan, first quarter of the 18th century Brass, steel and glass It measures 3.81 in x 3.81 x 0.59 (9.7 cm x 9.7 x 1.5) It weights 0.57 lb (259 g) State of conservation: some signs of use and some slight scratches on both the metal and the glass. The whole instrument is made of brass, apart from the glass cover and the magnetic steel needle. The cup of the compass has a lid and is attached to a square plate; inside the wind rose is engraved and the cardinal points are marked. The square plate is graduated 0 ° / 360 ° around the compass and is divided into four vertices, bearing the inscription: Pierre de Baillou Fait à Milan A shaped radial hand, which pivots between the cup and the plate, acts as a movable indicator. Nothing is known of the biography and activity of Pierre de Baillou. The fact that he signed a scientific instrument, defining it "made in Milan", allows us to hypothesize with some certainty that he was related to François de Baillou (Milan, 1700-1774), a Milanese optician and one of the most famous manufacturers of telescopes and microscopes of his time. Descending from a French family who had settled in Milan, François was nominated Royal Optician by Empress Maria Theresa in 1750. Pierre was probably his relative - perhaps his father - and may have started his business as a manufacturer of scientific instruments in Milan. This was then continued by François. A compass of proportions signed by Pierre is present in the collections of the Civic Collections of Applied Art of the Castello Sforzesco (Tullio Tomba, La collezione Scientifica delle civiche raccolte del Castello Sforzesco, in Rassegna di Studi e di Notizie, 1973, p. 114). A brass sundial from the first quarter of the 18th century signed Pierre Baillou Fait à Milan is kept at the Poldi Pezzoli museum in Milan (inv. 4141). Anthony John...
