This is a rare Greg Noll signature surfboard the Fain's Formula 2 Model. It is a transitional board measuring 8 feet long and was in production in Hermosa Beach, California between 1965/1969. Cream with green trim and graphics of the late 60's it is being sold with its' original (removable) green translucent fin. A great display board that is as ridable today as when first produced. Johnny Fain was Malibu's 1960's golden boy surfer, known for an aggressive surfing style and striking expertise on the waves. Greg Noll is widely regarded as the American pioneer of big wave surfing and one of the most respected surfboard shapers of surfing's golden era. This hard to find Greg Noll, Fain Formula II model is a wonderful merger of both mens talents. Representative of the transitional period between long and short board popularity this surfboard embraced a "next generation surfing style" to that of Noll's early days and early boards. The second signature surfboard of Noll's career; the first being his classic Miki Dora D'Cat model. It is notable that Dora and Fain had a rivalry that was legendary with many a waterborne battle between the two. The younger and smaller Fain always giving the older, original bad boy, Dora as good as he got. We love the fact that when Noll chose to make a transitional signature board he chose Fain to partner with. A few other notable bits: Fain grew up in Malibu CA and was featured in classic the 1960's surf movies "Muscle Beach Party," "How to Stuff a Wild Bikini" and "Beach Blanket Bingo." He was the only child of "Lassie" screenwriter Jeanne Bartlett. Greg Noll, nicknamed "Da Bull", shaped surfboards since his youth and opened the highly successful surfboard business carrying his name in the 1950s. Both men hold legendary placement in surfing history.
