Silver Maltese Royal military boat presented to Sir Robert Laycock Major General
About the Item
This larger scale solid silver presentation model depicts a traditional Maltese sailing or fishing boat.
The model is beautifully handmade in solid silver with Maltese silver hallmarks in several places. It is displayed onto an ebonised oval moulded wooden stand with a silver presentation plaque which is inscribed: Presented to H E Sir Robert Laycock by the Palace staff in token of respect May 1959.
Robert Laycock was a highly distinguished Army officer with the final rank of Major General. He was best known for his influential role in establishing and commanding the British commandos during the Second World War. After a highly distinguished military career, he finally held the position of the Chief of Combined Operations, succeeding Lord Louis Mountbatten in this role.
He was appointed the position of Governor of Malta in 1954 where he resided and worked from the Royal Grandmasters Palace, Valletta, Malta which was also the Royal residence when members of the Royal family were in attendance.
This fine silver model boat was given to him as a personal gift from the palace staff at the end of his second term in this prestigious position in 1959.
This is an important object with fabulous unquestionable provenance.
