Rare and important bronze crucifix, possibly by French ‘fondeur’ Barbedienne. Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892) does not need any further introduction, but that he also made top quality religious art is not known to many. This magnificent and beautifully detailed bronze Christ is definitely a rare find. For us to have been able to acquire it, again felt like a blessing. From the same collection we previously sold a larger and signed version via 1stdibs. This slightly smaller but exact same bronze corpus must therefor also be by Barbedienne. Ferdinand Barbedienne was capable of creating another bronze sculpture with the exact same stunning detail, but in a completely different size. This 19th century 'cutting edge technology' became world famous (in the art world) as the 'method Barbedienne'. Because there is no signature on this bronze corpus we, officially, have to describe it as 'attributed to Barbedienne'. However, since he was the only one capable of making a smaller version and because the original, larger corpus (see image 9 and 10) is signed by Barbedienne, there is no doubt that this stunning corpus too is by Barbedienne. The blackened or ebonized cross has at some point in time been restored (between the head of Christ and the bronze INRI sign) and that old and ancient looking wear, in our view, gives this antique crucifix even more character. For the bronze corpus to be in such great condition was a bonus. This bronze sculpture of the Lord is a true work of religious art and we are proud to be able to present it to you on 1stdibs.
