About the Item
Stunning and all hand carved Gothic Revival from the late 1800s depicting a biblical scene" The Supper at Emmaus ".
This unique and large set of three altar panels is another one of our recent great finds. What these panels depict is Jesus' appearance to two disciples and this biblical scene is here flanked by two more hand carved panels depicting a pair of arch angels. Anyone who has ever tried to carve anything out of a material as hard as marble understands how incredibly well these placks in thick relief were made. It is an artform, like so many, that is getting ever more rare. The serenity of Jesus breaking the bread and the eagerness of His disciples to learn is what, to us, stands out the most in this large and remarkable work of religious art. These striking and meaningful panels must have originally been part of a church or monastery altar. The excellent quality in the details and thus the perfect sharpness of the marble carvings make this piece even more special and a joy to behold. Thanks to the heavy and full white marble this antique can and will be enjoyed by you and by many generations after you.
