About the Item

Unique and amazingly hand carved Saint Luke symbol wall sculpture. This relatively large, hand carved Gothic Revival wall plaque is another one of our recent rare finds. All hand carved out of thick and solid oak and with some of the best details we ever saw, this church relic dates back to the earliest years of the 19th century. However, the quality of this evangelist symbol carving is so good that it could also be late 18th century. Over the centuries some repairs were done and there clearly also are some parts missing. However, the quality of this ecclesiastical antique is so good and this meaningful piece is so rare that we don't see that as a problem at all. When we first saw it, we immediately knew we had to have it. Mind you, Saint Luke was also the first Christian physician and he was venerated by the Catholic Church as the patron Saint of physicians and surgeons. We therefor believe that this particular antique will be extra desirable for any Christian doctor as well. Thanks to an integrated metal hook on the back, mounting this unique sculpture is child's play. For the collectors of stunning antique church relics we are also offering this marvelously hand carved pelican sculpture for wall mounting. The character ascribed to the pelican in this context is nearly as fabulous as that of the phœnix. From a clumsy, gluttonous, piscivorous water-bird, it was by the growth of legends transformed into a mystic emblem of Christ, whom Dante terms "Nostro Pelicano". St. Hieronymus gives the story of the pelican restoring its young ones destroyed by serpents as an illustration of the destruction of man by the old Serpent, and his salvation by the blood of Christ. The pelican in Christian art is an emblem of Jesus Christ, by "whose blood we are healed" and it is also a symbol of charity.
