Gilt Bronze Plaque of Saint Sebastian — 17th Century Exceptional gilt bronze devotional plaque, made in Spain according to 17th-century principles. This type of object, of intimate size and refined execution, was used both for private devotion and to adorn small domestic altars. The plaque represents Saint Sebastian, the martyr Christians venerated for his endurance and invincibility. The figure of the saint appears leaning against a tree, his bare torso elegantly modeled and crossed by arrows, in keeping with traditional iconography. The anatomical treatment is natural and balanced, typical of the Spanish Baroque style, which allows for the virtuosity of the model and the expression contained in the painting. The background shows a roughly outlined landscape, which extends deeply into the scene. The surface retains an original golden color, applied to the bronze with a quality that restores the volumes and details of the composition. This Spanish sculpture, probably from the late 16th century, displays expressive anatomy, emotional tension, and dramatic movement—stylistic traits strongly associated with the school of Juan de Juni, a leading figure in Castilian sculpture of the period. Sebastian is depicted half-naked, tied to a tree trunk, with traces of blood and arrows, symbols of his martyrdom. The sculpture demonstrates a high level of craftsmanship, particularly in the modeling of the torso, the twisted posture, and the naturalistic treatment of the face and hair. The piece retains much of its original polychromy and gilding, with some expected age-related losses. It has undergone preventive conservation treatment to ensure its structural stability while preserving its historical authenticity. Condition: Generally good condition considering its age. Some loss of polychromy and gilding is visible, particularly on the torso and base, but the sculpture retains a remarkable degree of originality.
