About the Item

Large and signed alabaster sculpture of a beautiful smiling young lady in winter wear. Over the many years we have sold a number of remarkable antique alabaster light fixtures, but never before did we come across an original, Art Deco lady table lamp. And to have found one of the largest and most beautifully hand carved ones with a truly beautiful smiling lady, felt like a blessing. Also, because with a remarkable piece like this, we know in advance that someone else too will want to decorate a certain part of their home with such a stunning and unique work of art. This is one of those great works of art that really lifts your spirit every time you look at it. Especially, when you understand the skill it would have took to create such a soft and happy face out of this relatively fragile mineral stone. And to then polish it to perfection and keep her face in mint condition for more than 100 years makes her even more desirable and a joy to behold. From her fur-like head-wear one can tell that this young lady is depicted in a winter-like setting and the stunningly stylized, icy lower section confirms that notion. We believe the artist wisely chose to depict her upper body in a stylized, wintery manner, because making a real chest of a lady light up would obviously degrade this truly excellent work of art. Speaking of the artist; in the lower ridge of the fur-like head wear (in her neck and best shown in image 15) we found the sculptor's signature. Unfortunately we have not been able to 'decipher' this signature (yet), but this sculpture probably was handcarved by one of the great Italian sculptors from that era. With most of our antique alabaster light fixtures originating from Italy (because that is where in Europe alabaster was won), we are familiar with Italians being known for their skills when it comes to hand carving alabaster in particular. This craft had literally been handed down to new generations for centuries. That is one of the reasons why this antique sculpture too has such amazing and realistic details. Especially the happy facial expression and the superbly carved, melting ice reveal that this sculpture is the work of a master carver. This work of art in the daytime and table lamp in the evening has some chips to the lowest part of the carved rectangular base, but otherwise you could not wish for a better condition antique. This table lamp AND top quality carved sculpture into one will arrive rewired to the highest standard for safe & immediate usage, no matter where you live.
