About the Item

This type of liturgical works were used in processions and other important liturgical acts, changing often when there were economic means for it and following the new fashions. Because of its relationship with the Catholic religion and its use in important events, it was preferred to use metals and precious materials for its realization (gold, silver, silver, enamels, precious stones ...); in case the parish or ecclesiastical authority can not afford it, they were carried out in others that are more humble in comparison but with an appearance of wealth (as in the present case, in golden copper). In this second case also the fashions and techniques of the silverware were followed, being able to find striking similarities in works of different materials. The typology of this cross auction, known as "flordelisada" by the ends of the arms of the same, was one of the most common in the Spanish silverware of the time and enjoyed a long tradition. Compare the cross with another one of silver of 1400 of the Museum of the Cathedral of Tarragona; with the so-called "Cruz de Torrijas" (13th century, today in the Museum of Sacred Art of Teruel) copper with cabochons of similar profile; with that of the Municipal Cemetery of Muriel Viejo (Soria); or with the most elaborate cross of the first third of the fifteenth century in gold-plated silver from the National Archaeological Museum of Madrid (from the church of San Martín de la Vega de Paje, Asturias, and an execution linked to Burgos); with the processional cross of the late 14th century, from Spain and now preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of New York (inv 36.134); or with the fourteenth-century enamel piece from Urruez and found in the Altarpiece Museum in Burgos, etc." Size: 26x2x45 cms.
