Rare Tibetan or Mongolian Gau Box Front with Garuda and Guardian Lion - Buddhist

About the Item

Rare Tibetan or Mongolian Gau Box Front with Garuda and Guardian Lion Tibet or Mongolia, 19th Century Dimensions: 7 × 9 × 2 cm Weight: 36 grams Material: Solid silver Provenance: Tibetan or Mongolian origin This finely crafted silver front panel of a Gau (portable amulet box) originates from the Tibetan or Mongolian Buddhist tradition and dates to the 19th century. The composition features a powerful depiction of Garuda, the celestial bird and fierce protector, alongside a guardian lion, a symbol of courage, vigilance, and spiritual power. Such images were meant to protect the wearer from harm, both physical and spiritual, and to invoke blessings. Worn close to the body or placed on altars, Gau boxes housed sacred relics, prayers, or miniature images. This front plate showcases exceptional repoussé work and a strong sense of devotional symbolism. A rare and expressive artifact of Himalayan Buddhist ritual tradition.
