About the Item
Rare Travel Icon from 19th century Russia known as the “Consolation in Grief and Sorrows”. Stamped 84, Semyon Galkin, Moscow.
Semyon Galkin was an icon artist. In 1892, he founded the firm S.G. Galkin & Co. The firm took part in the All-Russian Art and Industry Exhibition at Nizhny-Novgorod in 1896, where they received a medal for their work. Galkin also supplied ecclesiastical works such as these to manufacturer-retailers such as Kurliukov and Morozov. This icon with its highly engraved repousse cover and restrained enamel decoration is very representative of the style of the firm.
