About the Item

Very rare Gothic casket / box for keeping religious artefacts. Over the past 12 months we have offered a number of very rare works of religious art that we purchased from an avid collector whom had passed on in early 2019. Unfortunately his relatives knew little about many of the pieces and he (the former owner) had not written down what most of his pieces were or where they came from. Many pieces of that collection have already found new homes across the globe, but we will be offering many more in the course of this year and possibly well into 2021. Reliquary caskets / boxes are mostly found in museums and they rarely come up for auction. Most of them date back to medieval times and they usually are made of metal. Finding more contemporary ones is extremely difficult and we have no idea how and where the former owner acquired this rarity. Less knowledgeable individuals must have, several times, picked up this piece the wrong way, because many of the protruding trefoil elements around the bottom have broken off. Apart from these missing pieces along the bottom this handcrafted Gothic church relic is of museum quality and condition. The carvings are superb and the gilding too is in the best condition possible. The stunning and heavy lid comes with two perfect finial-handles. Have you also noticed that the magnificent carvings just around the lid (so on top of the casket itself) are done in base-relief? This rare and very difficult technique, whereby everything is carved away except for the motif, makes this near-antique casket even more special and an absolute joy to own and look at. It stands as firm and strong as the day it was created and its design and top quality craftsmanship will never fail to impress.
