Cannocchiale in ottone cromato e cuoio firmato W. OTTWAY & Co Ltd Ealing London A49 in uso agli ufficiali dell’esercito britannico durante la prima guerra mondiale. Messa a fuoco ad un allungo, diametro focale cm 3 – inches 1.2, allungo massimo cm 62,5 – inches 24.6, minimo cm 43,5 – inches 17.2. Buono stato perfettamente funzionante, completo di base per l’appoggio in legno e ottone realizzata su misura. Fondata probabilmente alla fine del XIX secolo a Ealing, Londra, la ditta commerciò con il nome di W. Ottway & Company Ltd. fino al 1968; dopo il 1948 la ditta fu rilevata da Hilger & Watts mantenendo il suo nome originale. Curiosità Secondo la leggenda, un giorno imprecisato del 1608 i figli di Hans Lipperhey, che era un occhialaio di Middelburg, stavano giocando nel laboratorio del padre con delle lenti. Quando uno dei figli mise una lente concava vicino al proprio occhio, tenendo nell’altra mano una lente convessa, e tendendo il braccio in direzione della punta del campanile della cattedrale vi guardò attraverso, vide ingrandirsi e avvicinarsi il gallo segnavento che si trovava sulla cima. Mostrato subito il fenomeno al padre, egli fissò le lenti su un’assicella per rendere più agevole l’osservazione, creando così il primo rudimentale cannocchiale. Galilei non rivendicò mai l'invenzione del cannocchiale, ma il della Porta, sentendosi defraudato dell'invenzione, in una lettera a Federico Cesi, nel 1609 scrive: "…del segreto del cannocchiale l'ho visto et è un coglioneria, et è presa dal mio libro IX De Refractione…". Smentendo indirettamente il della Porta, quando Galilei mostrò il cannocchiale ad alcuni senatori della Repubblica di Venezia, lo stupore che suscitò fu enorme. L'ultima foto è la confezione regalo.
