Stick barometer in glass and wood case Northern Italy early 19th century

About the Item

Ebonized wood cue barometer, manufacturing in northern Italy from the early 19th century, housed in an elegant custom-made shrine glass and ebonized wood with decorative motifs. Barometer with ebonized wooden tank complete with sea bone float indicating correct mercury level, adjusted by setting screw underneath the tank. The barometer is also complete with a rack-and-pinion reading nonius for verification of the change in atmospheric pressure, of hygrometer placed at the top and two great mercury and alcohol thermometers for algebraic comparison of temperature. Barometer measurements Height cm 120 - inch 47.5, width cm 18.3 -inch 7.2 depth/thickness cm 8 - inch 3.2. Display case measures height cm 148 - inch58.2, width cm 24 - inch 9.5, depth cm 11.2 - inch 4.3 Excellent condition fully functional. The barometer is intact, original and complete in all its parts. The barometric tube and tank were emptied of mercury for safety during transport in order to avoid mercury spillage, as the barometer should always travel in an upright position, which is practically impossible. Mercury for filling will be delivered together with the barometer in a special sealed container. Since ancient times man, as a farmer and navigator, has observed and attempted to predict weather patterns. The scientific study of the changes occurring in the atmosphere began in the mid-17th century in connection with experiments tending to prove the existence of a vacuum, which ancient philosophers denied since "nature abhors a vacuum!" If you fill a long tube with water and place it upside down in a bucket with water, the column of liquid will descend until its weight is counterbalanced by air pressure on the surface of the water in the bucket: at some point in the upper, closed end of the tube there will be a vacuum. Evangelista Torricelli (1608-1647), mathematician and physicist, a disciple of Galileo, was the first in 1643 to build an instrument capable of detecting changes in air pressure. He described his experiment resulting from the discovery that changes in atmospheric pressure are related to changes in weather.
