About the Item

Early 1960s Dave Sweet custom longboard made in Santa Monica, California. Shaped by the late surfing Pioneer, Dave Sweet, (1929-2015). Features beautiful seafoam green panels with reverse T-band stringer design. Finished with a remarkable 11-piece balsa/redwood single fin. A truly stunning 1960s vintage surfboard in all original condition. Dave Sweet played a pioneering role in the introduction of foam surfboards. The advent of lightweight polyurethane foam surfboards transformed the sport, helping it to reach the mainstream. The development of foam surfboard has often been credited to Hobie Alter and Gordon "Grubby" Clark. Reason being, Sweet didn't care to claim credit for being the first to market for several decades. Sweet had actually began making and selling polyurethane foam surfboards as early as 1956, more than a year before Hobie and Clark began production. Many decades after Sweet's first experiments with foam, his boards have become highly coveted collectors items. The Smithsonian Institution in Washington acquired one of his boards for a 1988 exhibit showcasing American craftsmanship. Dave Sweet sadly passed away in 2015, at the age of 86.

Dale ‘Hawk’ Velzy made numerous contributions to the world of surfing and as a result was one of the first individuals to be inducted into the Hermosa Beach Surfers Walk of Fame in 2003, two years before passing away. Velzy began shaping surfboards in the 1940's in Manhattan Beach, California. Board of the day were hard to ride and transport due to the size and weight. Velzy saw this as an opportunity and started to shape surfboards using lightweight balsawood which made the boards easier to ride and transport. He soon outgrew his first board shop in Manhattan Beach which was opened in 1950, this shop would later be credited as the first commercial surfboard factory. Velzy later formed a partnership with the legendary board maker Hap Jacobs...
