Mid 1980s Shaun Tomson WSA All Star Team 2+1 surfboard shaped by Don Kadowaki. Features an airbrushed flame design with Batman theme traction pad. WSA All Star Team surfboard bag included in the sale. A fantastic example of a 1980s vintage team rider surfboard. Shaun Tomson, "South Africa's Champ" was the 1977 IPS World Champion. ?In the mid-1970s Shaun became a key figure in the? ?“Free Ride?”? generation,? ?along with Mark Richards,? ?Wayne Bartholomew,? ?and others.? ?They showcased their signature styles and courage in riding the infamous waves on Oahu?’?s fabled North Shore.? ?The? ?“Free Ride?”? surfers were the first true professionals in the history of the sport. To this day, Shaun Tomson is still recognized as a role model for many of the top professional surfers.? ?Tomson also changed the way surfers rode the tube section of the wave.? He's quoted saying ?“Time is expanded inside the tube". One of his signature techniques was that of effortlessly weaving around and through collapsing sections of the tube. His appearances at iconic surf breaks, Off The Wall and Pipeline were immortalized in? ?the hit surfing film “?Free Ride?”?. Upon the films release, Shaun was widely known as the most advanced surfer of the time.? ?Naturally, he won the? coveted ?1975? ?Pipeline Masters title, laying a base for? ?his appearance? ?at the newly formed IPS Grand Prix World Championship Tour.? ?Shaun would go on to compete on the professional tour for? ?16? ?years.? ?His crowning achievement was winning the International Professional Surfing World Championship in? ?1977.? ?Shaun also won ?19? ?major professional surfing events in his career,? ?being both the youngest and oldest surfing competitor to win. ?Towards the end of his surfing career, Tomson ?managed and sold two? ?successful clothing brands?, Instinct in the? ?1980s and Solitude in the? ?1990s??.? Recognized as one of the ?25? ?most influential surfers of the century and? one of the ?10? ?greatest surfers of all time? (?Surfer Magazine? ?1999?)?.
