Vintage Anti Shank Golf Club

About the Item

Mashie-Niblick golf club by Gibson of Kinghorn. A good Mashie-Niblick iron (Smith's model) made by Gibson of Kinghorn with a hickory shaft and suede leather grip. The head with hand punched dot face markings and the rear clearly stamped with the Gibson 'Deep Struck Star' cleek mark. Also marked 'a. Mathews' signature, Special, Made In Scotland, Warranted Hand Forged, Rustless Iron, Smith's model, Mashie-Niblick'. A nice anti-shank golf club in restored condition. Gibson's 'Outline Star' cleek mark was registered in 1906, although it had been used since Gibson began his business in the 1890's and was replaced with the 'Deep Struck Star' in the 1930's. The company made many "signature" clubs. A good usable original hickory golf club. Approximate measurements:- Length 91½ cm Width of face 10 cm Depth of face 5½ cm 40° loft Swing weight C-6. Dimensions: Height 91.5 cm / 36 " Period 1900-1949 Year circa 1930. Steel and Hickory.

    Vintage Hickory Golf Club, Mid Iron. A fine and nicely weighted dot punched faced mid iron by Josh Taylor (brother of John Henry "J.H." Taylor who was best known for his fine British Open play, winning his first Open in 1894 and went on to win it a further four times). The hickory shaft with polished leather grip, the rear of the club head marked 'Selected, Mid-iron, Warranted Hand Forged, Josh Taylor (signature) Richmond Park' with Taylor's 'Greyhound' cleek mark. The original hickory shaft stamped 'Josh. Taylor Selected'. Taylor was a professional at Aldeburgh and later at a number of other clubs: Seacroft (from 1907), Acton (from 1909), Sudbury (from 1920) and Richmond Park (from 1924). The measurements shown are the length of the shaft with hosel and the width and depth of the face. A great golf club iron in good original condition and very usable for modern hickory play. Approximate 24° loft & swing weight C5. Taken from Wikipedia: Joshua Taylor (1881 - 28 September 1957) was an English professional golfer, the younger brother of J. H. Taylor. He played in the 1913 England-Scotland Professional Match and for Great Britain in the 1921 match against America. Taylor was born Northam, Devon in 1881, 10 years after his brother J. H. Taylor.
