Industrial Collectibles and Curiosities

INDUSTRIAL STYLE

Industrial floor lamps, bar stools, desks and other industrial-style furnishings have experienced a resurgence in popularity with the rise of interest in minimalist design.

It's a look that celebrates the past even as it suggests vigor, productivity and brawn. The newly chic industrial style of decor repurposes the simple, sturdy furniture of an earlier world of commerce — brushed-metal storage cabinets and display shelves, task lamps and pendant lights with enameled shades, work tables with worn wooden tops and cast-iron bases — and couples them with aesthetic touches emblematic of energy and optimism, from bright upholstery fabrics to flowers.

The rise in prominence of the industrial style has come hand-in-hand with the residential repurposing of former manufacturing and warehouse districts throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. In many loft apartments created in shuttered factories, the architectural envelope has been left intact.

Industrial-style interiors feature elements like raw brick walls, exposed steel beams and oak floors whose history is written in every pit and gouge. Iron and glass transom windows give definition and interest to small kitchen areas anchored by kitchen islands made of marble, steel and brass, while taxidermy or vintage neon signs serve as wall art in living rooms dotted with leather club chairs. Patina is the keynote to a decor in sync with such surroundings.

On 1stDibs you will find industrial furniture designs that wear their age beautifully — and were built to last.

This is one of the largest and rarest of the Dr. Auzoux papier mâché anatomical models. It’s also one of our most ambitious offerings. This prized 1846 first generation handmade model dates to the mid-1800s. I am told that there are almost 200 separate removable parts. It was recently found tucked away in a barn for over 20 years and is fresh to the market. A handful of Auzoux full size horse...

Anatomical Model of Gorilla by Dr. Louis Auzoux Plus Unique Handwritten Booklet
Located in Haarlem, NL
Sinke & van Tongeren exhibited this extremely rare Auzoux Gorilla by carefully taking apart the model and creating an exploded view of this historically important piece. When viewed from a particular angle all pieces come together to form the original shape. It was part of the exhibition called ‘TIER’ at MOA in The Netherlands The story of a remarkable 19th century anatomical model created just four years after Darwin unleashed a political storm with his theories on human evolution. The publication of Charles Darwin’s controversial On the Origin of Species in 1859 caused debates to rage about human evolution, debates which witnessed the politicisation of a creature whose existence had only recently been confirmed by modern science. On one side of the argument was the Darwinian camp; on the other were those opposed to Darwin’s theory, such as Richard Owen, the famed Director of the Natural History Museum and a man who, interestingly, coined the word ‘dinosaur’. Tales of the creature in question had endured for centuries, but up until 1847 it remained a myth, an unknown. This all changed thanks to the missionary Thomas Savage and the anatomist Jeffries Wyman who wrote a paper for the journal of the Boston Society of Natural History in which they described a new species: Troglodytes gorilla. (Later, in 1929, Harvard zoologist Harold Coolidge would apply the synonym Gorilla gorilla...

19th Century Dr. Auzoux Papier Mâché Model of Head
Located in Peekskill, NY
This fantastically detailed papier mâché model of the head dates to the mid-19th century. It was made by Dr. Auzoux and listed in his catalogue. The attention to detail is breathtaking. The structures are numbered and these pictures only scratch the surface. The whole model comes apart and as each section is removed new treasures are revealed within. Take a close look the photo of the removable eye... Its so small but still comes apart to show more. The hand work that went into each part is amazing. and it all is mounted on the original turned wood base. French physician Louis Thomas Jerome Auzoux (1797-1880). In the early 19th century, human cadavers for the study of anatomy were in short supply. The dissection of human corpses was difficult, due to the fast rate of decomposition, and also illegal. And the wax anatomical models...

Large 19th Century Dr. Auzoux Paper Mache Model of Brain
Located in Peekskill, NY
This fantastically detailed double sized 19th century papier mâché model of the brain dates to the mid-19th century. It was made by Dr. Auzoux and listed in his catalogue. The attention to detail is breathtaking and this includes the anatomical landmarks of the cerebral hemispheres, corpus callosum and central brain, brain stem and cerebellum. The structures are numbered and these pictures only scratch the surface. The whole model comes apart and as each section is removed new treasures are revealed within. Even the various tracts within the cerebral hemispheres are individually marked with beautifully drawn paper fan like structures. It looks to be missing one section cover and a second piece on the opposite side. French physician Louis Thomas Jerome Auzoux (1797-1880). Dr. Auzoux’s Historic Full Sized Quarter Horse Model
Located in Peekskill, NY
This is one of the largest and rarest of the Dr. Auzoux papier mâché anatomical models. It’s also one of our most ambitious offerings. This prized 1846 first generation hand made model dates to the mid 1800s. I am told that there are almost 200 separate removable parts. It was recently found tucked away in a barn for over 20 years and is fresh to the market. A handful of Auzoux full size horse model are known to exist… can be found in the scientific collections of museums around the world. This is the only known example that can be found outside of a museum and is considered the Holy Grail for this type of model. Condition: Model was stored in a barn for 20 years. Typical with most 170 year old papier mâché Auzoux models… A large portion of the exterior shows a weathered finish. Most of the original details are intact including a large number of labels. Some spots of paint are gone and base layer is exposed. Horse is missing an ear, and my be it's only missing part. As you remove layers of the model, paint peeling is much less severe. Additional layers are just dirty and seem to be easily cleanable. This 65 inch by 76 inch model is labeled and can be completely taken apart, offering a hyper-realistic, precisely detailed overview of a horse’s anatomy, comparable to what one might learn through dissection. When the first prototype was created in 1844 by physician Louis Auzoux, it was a revolutionary teaching aid for veterinary students. Dr Louis Auzoux (Louis Thomas Jerome Auzoux) (1797-1880) was a French anatomist. He is known for his large scale zoological and botanical models for educational use. Models such as this quarter horse...
