About the Item

Antique late 19th Century Victorian solid silver & enamel life belt and flag shaped ashtray, Of round shape, mounted with twisted rope shaped boarders, applied with The Royal Yacht Squadron flag. Established on June 1, 1815, at the Thatched House Tavern in St James's, London, The Yacht Club was founded by 42 enthusiasts of sea yachting. Their gatherings, held twice a year in London and Cowes, provided a forum for discussing yachting matters over dinner. Membership was exclusive to individuals who owned vessels not less than 10 tons, a criterion now understood as being actively involved in yachting. The Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) is a distinguished British yacht club headquartered at Cowes Castle on the Isle of Wight, United Kingdom. Member yachts bear the RYS suffix to their names and, upon receiving the appropriate warrant, are entitled to fly the White Ensign of the Royal Navy instead of the merchant Red Ensign worn by most other UK-registered vessels. The club's patron was Queen Elizabeth II. While the Royal Yacht Squadron participated in the 2021 America's Cup in Auckland, New Zealand, with the Ineos Team UK syndicate led by Sir Ben Ainslie, victory eluded them. However, in March 2021, an entity affiliated with the RYS, known as Royal Yacht Squadron Racing Ltd, was officially designated as the Challenger of Record for the 37th America's Cup competition. A must for any collector of Tobaconalia or Naval enthusiast, or just as a stand alone item, as useful today as it was the day it was made. CONDITION In Great Condition - Wear expected with age.
