Haviland & Co., a distinguished manufacturer of Limoges porcelain in France, commenced its legacy in the 1840s, guided by the Haviland family's porcelain expertise. Notably, their finest era blossomed during the late 19th century, marked by innovative designs in porcelain, stoneware, and other ceramics that mirrored wider artistic trends.
Edouard-Marcel Sandoz, the Swiss animalier sculptor and painter, entered the scene in 1915, collaborating with Haviland. Sandoz's creative partnership introduced a novel style, yielding utilitarian pieces such as dishes, vases, inkwells, and lamps. In a span of under a decade, this collaboration bore fruit in nearly a hundred exceptional creations, each a testament to the convergence of artistry and craftsmanship. Haviland & Co.'s partnership with Sandoz stands as a significant chapter in the annals of porcelain artistry, blending American porcelain import tradition with European creative brilliance.

Edouard-Marcel Sandoz
Born in Basle, educated in Switzerland, Edouard Marcel Sandoz worked mainly in Paris, where he settled in 1908. A sculptor of men and of animals, he expressed himself in bronze, in ceramic, and through the direct cutting of stone. A painter of flowers and of landscapes, he was also an unflagging producer of sketches and water-colours. His motto : “ In art, one has to love everything : nature, science, one's fellow man… ” His defining characteristics : intellectual curiosity and technical discipline. His freedom of expression was grounded in mastery of classical and traditional techniques, his knowledge of materials, the constant search for new tools, the opening up of new artistic territories, and the study and profound understanding of his subject-matter. His very personal style, developed in the course of a long career, bears the imprint of the Art Nouveau period, in which he was a forceful presence. The predominance of animalism in his sculptural work incited him to found the French Society of Animalists in 1933. His commitment to the service of his fellow artists led him to preside over the Baron Taylor Association for more than thirty years, to found the Charitable Society for Children of Artists, and to contribute to the creation of the Cité des Arts in Paris. In recognition of his talents and achievements, France elected him a Member of the Academy of Fine Arts, and appointed him to the rank of Commander both of the Legion of Honour and of the Order of Arts and Letters.

1930's German Art Deco Porcelain Half Doll
Located in Red Lion, PA
Stunning 1930s German Art Deco Porcelain Half Doll with Rococo Hairstyle
This exquisite 1930s German porcelain half doll captures the refined beauty and timeless glamour of the Art Deco period, paired with the romantic influence of 18th-century Rococo style. Rendered in fine porcelain with exceptional attention to detail, this rare figure is a striking example of German artistry at its peak.
Her delicate features are simply enchanting — bright blue eyes accented by soft blue eyeshadow, rosy cheeks, and vivid red lips, all hand-painted with precision. Her ornate updo evokes the powdered wigs of the 1700s, gathered high with an elegant bow at the back and a tiny tiara perched at the front, nodding to both historic elegance and theatrical flair.
What sets this figure apart is her graceful, outstretched arms, posed in a fluid and balletic gesture, capturing a moment of poised movement. It’s a pose both sculptural and expressive, and one rarely seen in typical half dolls. Her condition is excellent, with no chips, cracks, or signs of repair. Here delicately painted features remain vivid after nearly a century.
