This is a rare antique desk liquid-petrol lighter, created in London England by the luxury brand of Alfred Dunhill, back in the 1929. The unusual lighter is the iconic ball shaped model named Unique with the Dunhill lift arm retailed in Paris France. The lighter has been assembled and carefully crafted in the shape of a ball in solid sterling silver with plain surfaces. This lighter show very nice condition with minimal traces of use and beautiful guilloche. Recently cleaned and serviced, not polished just to preserve the antique patina.

Sterling silver petrol pocket lighter designed by The Nassau Lighter Co.
This is an very rare American full size petrol pocket lighter, created in New York city by The Nassau Lighter Company, between the 1910 and 1911. The rare semi-automatic lighter has been crafted in sterling silver and decorated in both sides with engravings of organic floriated patterns. The lighter is fitted with a push button and a spring to allow the opening system and spark with a rotation friction wheel. The original petrol screw is in the rear side and all parts are original with no replacements. As an interesting fact, the name of this lighter owes its name to Nassau Street, where the factory was located. The price of these lighters started at 1.- dollar for the nickel variant and escalated in price depending on the metal and finish. As an example, specimens are known in bronze, sterling silver, gold and silver plate and in solid gold. Depending on the finish and its decoration, it carried a premium price.

The Nassau Lighter Company
The company was first incorporated in 1911 by the three partners, L.W. Seligman, W.J. Fallon and E.L. Haas of New York City (United States Tobacco Journal,1911). The company offices and factory was located at the number 65 in Nassau street in New York. After about a year, the company went out of business (Metal Industry, 1913). The plant of the Nassau Lighter Co. was sold and the company retired from business (The Brass World and Platers Guide, 1913). The Nassau pocket lighters shown are marked 'PAT.DEC.26.1905', referencing the friction-disc tinder lighter patented by Albert R Weisz in 1905 which is a very different design. The Nassau Household Lighter shown without base is marked with two patent dates, the Weisz date and 'PAT.OCT.3.1911' that corresponds to Frederick W. Goerdes' utility patent shown below. This is a beautiful table petrol lighter, created in Moscow during the Russian imperial period, back in the 1908-1926. The table-desk lighter was crafted in an oval shape by the silversmith Andrei Andreev Aleksandrov in solid .875/.999 sterling silver with repousse and plain patterns. The repousse design has the motifs of flowers and organic patterns. The lighter is fitted with a removable lid which show the monogram CB-III in Cyrillic letters in attribution to the previous owner, all accented in yellow gold.

Ltd. associated to Asprey, the mark for the assay of the .925 silver, the letter H for the years 1963-1964 and signed, "ASPREY LONDON MADE IN ENGLAND Y7 A&CO LTD H REGD No. 856727".
Asprey
The company was established in England in Mitcham, Surrey, in 1781. Founded as a silk printing business by William Asprey, it soon became a luxury emporium. In 1841, William Asprey's elder son Charles went into partnership with a stationer located on London's Bond Street. In 1847, the family broke with this partner and moved into 167 New Bond Street, the premises Asprey occupies today. From its central London location, Asprey advertised 'articles of exclusive design and high quality, whether for personal adornment or personal accompaniment and to endow with richness and beauty the table and homes of people of refinement and discernment.' An early specialty was dressing cases. Asprey crafted traditional cases and designs, mostly in leather, suitable for the new style of travel ushered in by railways. As the business grew, the company acquired manufacturing facilities and hired silversmith, goldsmith, jewelers and watchmakers. In the 1920's, commissions poured in from around the world, from American millionaire J. P. Morgan to potentates such as the Maharaja of Patiala, who commissioned a huge teak travelling trunk for each of his wives, in which each trunk was fitted with solid silver washing and bathing utensils with waterspouts of ornate tiger head and lined with blue velvet. A very unusual table petrol lighter, created in Paris France by Tiffany & Co. back in the 1916. This is an extremely rare table lighter has been crafted in solid .900/.999 silver and carved Orbicular Ocean Jasper. Mounted in a round dentilated flat base and fitted with a chained lid.
Gemstones: The main body of the lighter is carved from one single piece of rare Orbicular Ocean Jasper from Madagascar.
Birthstone: For the month of April 20 to May 20
Weight: 226.50 Grams, (145.19 Dwt).
Measurements: 47 mm by 47 mm by (1.85 x 1.85 x 3.75 Inches).
Hallmarks: Stamped with French marks, the maker's maitre mark EM inside a lozange cartouche, the brand name mark, the French tax plaque Ministere Des Finances with monogram CI and signed, "TIFFANY & CO. PARIS".
Note: On 10th December 1910 the French state adopted a new tax regulations on all devices indented to produce spark or fire by friction, or by any other means, and of the combustion of a flammable substance. Since 1st January 1911 every lighter in France that was intended for sale in the French market had to be taxed and adequately marked. To confirm that the excise duty was paid to the Ministry of Finance a special duty metal plate (stamp) was attached (usually welded) to the lighter by the lighter manufacturers. The fees charged by the French state were high but the tax rates levied by the state were varying depending on the type and finish of the lighter. Following tax rates were used: 2 French francs for common pocket lighters, 5 Fr for pocket lighters made of silver, 20 Fr for luxury pocket lighters (e.g. made of gold), 5 Fr for common table/desk lighters (over 10 cm), 10 Fr for table/desk lighters (over 10 cm) made of silver, 50 Fr for luxury table/desk lighters (over 10 cm) made of gold or platinum. Between 1911 and 1916 a simple cooper plate was used which had the date 1911 engraved. Later, between 1916 and 1945 a new plate (undated) was introduced with the letters "C" and "I" (stands for indirect taxes) and a profile of Mercury (patron god of financial gain, commerce and messengers) with an inscription "Ministère Des Finances" (eng. Ministry of Finance). Two shapes were used for the plate – oval for table lighters, the other one for pocket lighters. Additional to the two duty plates a marking "BL" (Briquet de Luxe, eng. luxury lighter) was introduced in 1926. It was a small hallmark which was considered as more discreet and applied only on luxury lighters like Quercia or Lancel. An art deco petrol lighter designed by Naldun.
Very beautiful and useful petrol lighter, created in America by the Naldun Company, back in the 1930. It was crafted as a slider piece in the art deco style, with an octagonal shape in solid .925/.999 sterling silver. Embellished on top with an Essex glass piece depicting the intaglio carving of a horse. It is in great shape with minimal trace of wear, with no dings, marks or bumps. The Essex glass piece is in perfect shape with remains of all the vibrant colors.
Weight: 16.40 Grams, (10.51 Dwt).
Size: Octagonal Small.
Measurements: 15 mm by 15 mm by 43 mm (0.59 x 0.59 x 1.70 Inches).
Hallmarks: Stamped with the maker's mark, the mark for the assay of the silver and signed, "NALDUN REG. MADE IN U.S.A PAT. PEND. STERLING".
Essex Glass
Essex crystal pieces are formed from a rock crystal cabochon (polished domes of rock crystal with a flat base), an image or motif is then reverse carved into the flat base, and then painted, to give them impression of a three dimensional object or image encapsulated in the cabochon when viewed from above. Production of a reverse crystal intaglio begins with the mining and cutting of fine rock crystal from Brazil or Madagascar. A well-formed cabochon is the key to a beautifully made reverse intaglio and the tedious process of hand polishing it to perfection had to be completed before the design work could begin. A watercolor rendering of the image was painted on the underside of the cabochon and an oil and diamond dust mixture was used along with up to 250 scribing tools to carve the design into the interior of the crystal “…the deeper the carving the more pronounced trompe l’oeil effect.” Once the carving was established the painting process began with extremely fine brushes and paint working in reverse to create incredibly detailed images. This process of carving into the back of the cabochon is sometimes referred to as reverse intaglio, not be to mistaken with intaglio, which is designed to be viewed from the same side on which it is carved, unlike Essex crystal. Particularly when the image is of something which is itself small in reality, such as an insect, they can be very convincing when created by skilled craftsman.
