Very rare puzzle tiles box model 259. designed by Ko Verzuu for Ado Holland in 1939. Ado means Arbeid door onvolwaardigen, translated; labor by incapacitated, which makes this an even more special piece. Toys by Ado are being highly collected at the moment, even more than ever cause this is very decorative combined with 1950s furniture from all countries!
Jacobus Johannes Josephus (Ko) Verzuu, a former construction supervisor from Utrecht, led the ADO workshops. He had delved into architecture and art and developed a strong preference for the abstract lines and bright colors, which can also be found in the followers of De Stijl group from the 1920s, followed by Piet Mondriaan, Theo van Doesburg, Vilmos Huszár, Bart van de Leck, J.J.P Oud, Gerrit Rietveld and more. This group of architects and artists was active between 1917 and the early 1930s. They made abstract art, architecture and furniture in the primary colors red, blue and yellow. The dollhouse furniture by Verzuu is strongly inspired by the clean lines and the colors used by the architect Gerrit Rietveld.
Very nice and super decorative puzzle tile box, handmade and hand painted in typical colors. This is a puzzle tiles box and has original paint in stunning unused condition. De Bijenkorf and Metz & Co sold a lot of Ado furniture in the 30s-50s. ADO Toys have a great charm because of their played look and original age wear but this one is very well kept. This box is in a fantastic original condition and would look highly decorative, you can make your own artwork with it. Would be an amazing addition to any interior or collection. Marked with the metal Ado tag at the front of the box.

Ko Verzuu
Ko Verzuu was a former construction supervisor from Utrecht, led the Arbeid Door Onvolwaardigen (ADP) workshops. In addition, he designed the cars, building blocks, games and doll furniture that were hand-made by his team of patients. Verzuu tested the quality of his toys on his children. He immersed himself in art and architecture, with which he developed a strong preference for abstract lines and bright colors found in the 20s group, De Stijl. ADO toys, therefore, are curiously avant-garde, inspired by the great artists of the time. In 2012, they were on show as part of the “Century of the Child: Growing by Design, 1900–2000” exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The same year, the CODA Museum in Apeldoorn, Netherlands.
