About the Item

This is a rare, part set of wooden lithograph board game tiles. This part set were produced in France and date to the first half of the 19th century, circa 1840. Each tile features a hand colored lithograph scene which is dissected into four triangular segments. The corner of each quartered tile is numbered, included are numbers 1,2,3,4,6,10,12,14. French in origin, the wonderful scenes depict life in the French Colonies and so were probably an educational board game for children, using perhaps spinners and corresponding cards. We have not found another example like this. The French Colonial empire was massive being only second in size to the British Empire during the 19th and 20th century with French territory spanning Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe to name but a few. Tile number 1 depicts a hunting scene, we can see a rabbit, deer and a hunting dog and two men with rifles. Tile number 2 depicts an early Steam railway scene with European French / Swiss attired lady and children disembarking at the railway platform. The earliest European railway opening circa 1835 in Belgium. Tile number 3 depicts a French victory scene from the Conquest of Algeria circa 1835 with tricolour flags, cannon, distinctive French light infantry uniform from this battle. Tile number 4 depicts a hunting scene, we can see a man with a trompe de chasse or French hunting horn and another man with a large whip with a pack of dogs at their feet. Both where very distinctive peaked riding caps. Tile number 6 depicts a prison scene with two men being marched to prison by two soldiers wearing distinctive black Napoleonic shako hats with muskets and bayonet, infantry lancers. Tile number 10 depicts a scene from the French Conquest of Algeria and includes French infantry soldiers in early 19th century dress circa 1835 and the elite French Zouave soldiers dressed in the red baggy trousers. Tile number 12 depicts a jungle scene with a family of monkeys on the ground as a pair of exotic parrots fly overhead in the canopy. Tile number 14 depicts a mining scene with a mountainous Canadian / North American background. The two men mining for gold. Measuring: Each complete tile approximately width 4 inch (10 cm) by height 3.25 inch (8.5 cm). depth 2/8 inch (0.5 cm). Condition: The tiles are in good condition for their vast age. There is some minor surface wear in places to the lithograph surface. Tile 4 has a very old repair top corner, hard to see.
