19th C. French Grand Tour Dore Bronze Colonne de Juillet Mounted as a Lamp
Located in New York, NY
A large and high quality 19th century French Dore bronze Colonne de Juillet mounted as a lamp. The Colonne de Juillet is a monument in France in recognition of the Revolution of 1830. It stands in the middle of the Place de la Bastille, and recognizes the "three glorious" or Trois Glorieuses (July 27-29) which was the fall of Charles X the King of France and the commencement of King Louis-Philippe, "King of the French". It was built between the years 1835 and 1840. This piece is truly spectacular and embodies the true masterpiece of the original Colonne de Juillet. The columnar body rests on a round carrara marble socle, which holds-up the dore bronze column. The dore bronze column sits on a square marble base which steps up-to a carrara marble base with dore bronze medallions symbolizing the great country of France. The upper portion is ornamented with Barye lions...

Fine Pair of George III Mahogany Wine Cisterns Attributed to Gillows
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
Each cistern is in the form of a fluted vase on a rectangular pedestal. The lead-lined vases have brass handles, removable lids with pineapple finials and taps. The crossbanded pedestals have cupboard doors enclosing slatted shelves for warming plates in one and a lead-lined slops drawers, a tambour fronted shelf and a cellaret in the other.
Susan Stuart, 'Gillow of Lancaster and London', 2008 vol 1 p308-315 illustrates many pedestal urns including the drawings for Workington Hall, Cumbria, dated 1788. PLates 342 and 343 show pedestals with a similar arrangement of shelves and drawers. Thomas Sheraton explained the functions of dining room pedestals in his 'Drawing Book' of 1793: 'IN spacious dining rooms the sideboards are often made without drawers of any sort, having simply a rail, a little ornament...

Set of Four Chinese Courtyard Door Panels, c. 1850
Located in Chicago, IL
A hallmark of Chinese architecture, tall door panels such as these were used in provincial courtyard homes to easily open up a room to the outdoors. Designed with solid wood panels instead of lattice windows, these door panels were likely installed facing the street, used to protect the home rather than provide decoration. The doors were originally linked by hinges set in opposite directions, allowing the doors to fold upon themselves as they open. Instead of the elaborate carvings often found on Qing-dynasty doors...

Miniature pocket globe in colourful card box
By Michael Manning
Located in ZWIJNDRECHT, NL
Miniature terrestrial pocket globe. Model of the earth.
London, 1857 by J. Manning
diameter of 1,75 inches / 4,5 cm.
This lovely miniature terrestrial globe consists of twelve copper engraved, hand coloured gores over a wooden base. The gores are varnished. The colouring is both subtle and original. With a central pin contained in a colourful card box.
A little about miniature globes: The miniature or pocket globe was a British invention, introduced to the world by Joseph Moxon in 1673 when he produced a 3-inch globe. To own a pocket globe is to have the whole world in miniature. Pocket globes were never to be taken very seriously – they never served any practical purpose; their size makes accurate calculations impossible, and they tend to lack the rings and dials for most common manipulations. No, they were seen more as a status symbol, or a lovely decorative artistic artefact to reside on a gentleman’s desk or small table. There is a school of thought that some of the cheaper pocket globes may have aided children’s education. Today, they reflect a lost and never-to-be-forgotten age of exploration...

Regency Brass Inlaid Rosewood Metamorphic Bench
Located in Kittery Point, ME
The rectangular padded seat covered in brown leather, opening to reveal a set of library steps, over a solid inlaid seat-rail and ring-turned tapering legs ending in castors.
18in. high, 34 1/2in. wide and 16 1/2in. deep. Opened, 36in. high and 49in. wide.
Rooms organized during the Regency period as libraries often had floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. The upper shelves were difficult to reach, so movable library stairs were invaluable. Further, libraries were one of the most important rooms in a stately house, symbol of its owner's wealth, culture and status. As a consequence, designers, architects and cabinet or chair makers devoted much attention to its architecture and decoration. Hence, the emrgence of innovative ideas such as our bench.
Enter the Regency era metamorphic library chair/bench (chairs are more common than benches)!
The tables, chairs and stools containing library steps were patented in Great Britain by Robert Campbell in 1774 but this innovative chair-based design did not become immediately popular. Once the Regency was established, a neo-classical interpretation of Campbell’s Metamorphic Library Chair concept started to become popular in London. Any early attributions rely heavily on two contemporary sketches...

Long circa 1800 Gothic Style Oak Board Trunk from France
Located in Dallas, TX
This is an unusually long Gothic style trunk from France, measuring nearly 6.5 feet long. It is carved from thick oak planks, and it dates to circa 1800. The trunk has well carved characteristic Gothic ornamentation on all of the front panels, while the rest of the piece remains simple, except a small molding to the lid. The big oak panels are joined by dowel reinforced mortise and tenon construction.
The long single plank lid is attached by iron hinges and opens to reveal a large rectangular space which reveals how all the boards were assembled. There is also a latch and keyhole at the center. This rare trunk would be perfect at the foot of a king size bed, an accent piece under a tall tapestry...

Paravento alla chinoiserie. Italia, secondo quarto XIX secolo
By Non-Standard Furniture and Lighting
Located in Milano, IT
