About the Item
A fine pair of 12-inch English table model globes on stands, manufactured by G.& J. Cary, the left globe with cartouche labeled “Carey’s New Terrestrial Globe, delineated from the best Authorities extant, Exhibiting the late Discoveries towards the NORTH POLE, and every improvement in Geography to the present Time, London, made and sold by G.&J. Cary, 86 St. James’s Street, Jany 4. 1830." and the right globe with cartouche labeled “The New Celestial Globe, on which are correctly laid down over 3500 stars Selected from the most accurate observations and calculated for the year 1800, with the extent of each constellation precisely defined by Mr. Gilpin of the Royal Society, Made & Sold by J. & W. Cary, Strand London, Jan 1, 1816,” Each globe is presented on a mahogany tripod stand with base compass, vertical brass engraved meridian ring and a horizontal wooden ring with calendar and zodiac applied paper labeling. Very good overall condition with some surface repairs, touchups, losses, and wear commensurate with age and use. The right globe shows some surface cracks near the wooden ring. Dimensions: Globes: 25” height x 12” diameter globes, 16.5” diameter overall with rings. Ref: 787
