1930s Japanese 4 Panel Carved Soapstone Room Divider Screen
About the Item
A stunning early 20th century Japanese room divider folding screen.
Consists of 4 brass hinged panels standing on castor wheels, with each panel lacquered in black and deep ochre red.
The panels are decorated with hand-carved soapstone sculptures of various birds of prey, some mid flight and others perched on lacquered natural wood, surrounded by delicate foliage and exotic scenery.

The top and bottom section of each panel are trimmed with intricately hand carved wood design of wild birds and dragons.
The reverse is in plain red and black lacquer with smatterings of soapstone butterfly figures and wild flowers.
Definitely a strong statement piece packed full of character, very brutalist.

In excellent vintage condition with some light surface marks consistent with age.
The folding screen is in good solid condition.
