Art Deco Carved Églomisé Mirror Screen ‘Signed’

About the Item

Remarkable both in its design and in its execution, this wheel-cut églomisé screen was created circa 1940 by David Harriton, whose firm Harriton Glass Works was based in New York City. Harriton was responsible for some of the most important 20th century architectural art glasswork, including the dramatic glass domes in both the United States Senate and House of Representatives. Rare today, Harriton’s work was acclaimed in 1944: "The process of carving glass by means of a sandblast has been known for years, but so exacting are the requirements for producing really fine art by this means that only a few artists can meet them. Among these is David Harriton, of New York…. In Harriton’s big studio close to the East River, he has rooms for designing, preparing the glass, and sand¬blasting. Here he produces murals, windows, wall plaques, screens and similar objects – some of them clear, others backed with color that shows through either frosted or transparent glass."(1). The present screen features the twelve signs of the modern zodiac in églomisé gold on silver leaf with the corresponding zodiac symbol superimposed and wheel-engraved on each panel’s front surface. The upper right corner panel is signed upper right on its face, “Harriton, New York.” Marks: Upper right panel is signed “Harriton, NY” (Ur).
