About the Item

A grand Art Nouveau period embossed and gilded three panel screen from Belle Epoque period France c.1895. The surprising design of this screen begins with the external frame across which all three leather panels are stretched. While the lower sections are strictly rectangular the left and right upper sections have a curved upward tilt to the top centre section where the frame has an asymmetrical profile with an unexpected curve. Each of the three consist of a single piece of leather affixed to the frame by a regular pattern of nail heads that define the edge of the screen as well providing visual punctuation to the entire piece. By spacing the nail head trim with an open space between each nail it is possible to see the gilded tape beneath the nail heads that completes and finishes all of the edges of the screen. The bold scale of the pattern within each panel identifies it as being from the late nineteenth century as the combination of scrolls and flourishes also employ a lattice work motif to further accentuate the decorative quality of the overall design. Because the leather is embossed the designs are actually raised across the surface and give it a sculptural impact heightened by the gilded decoration. The lavish visual movement across the entire surface is quite striking and luxurious at the same time. Originally this screen was used in an interior room and is known in French as a "paravent" translated as "against the wind". Screens were placed on the floor and adjacent to doorways where they were angled for stability (that is why they always have multiple panels) to protect the occupants from an unwelcome draft of cold air when the door was opened. Now these screens serve no actual purpose they are stunning pieces to display upon a wall where their unusual and unexpected design and material becomes a true focal point in a modern interior.
