French wooden room divider, Tambour Screen by Jomain Baumann, 1950s

About the Item

In the 1930s Jomain Baumann designed a room divider made of pine wooden slats attached with metal wire. He named it the Tambour screen. The individual wooden slats allowed the screen to be folded in any desired shape. It was produced by Melun Paris and soon became an iconic object, resulting in many copies in the following decades. Our Tambour screen probably dates back to the 1950s. It measures 175 cm wide and 175 cm high. The condition is consistent with age and use, the wood shows some discolouration at the bottom, but has been treated with a nourishing oil. Although not as fluently as it used to, the folding mechanism still works.
