About the Item

Japanese Edo Era Rinpa School Chrysanthemum gold leaf folding screen, mid-1700s Edo / Tokugawa Period, Japan, circa 1690s-1720s, six-panel wind-wall (Byobu (??), aka folding screen), mounted. Mineral pigments and excellently patinated heavy gold on Mulberry paper on a hand-built wooden core frame, paper hinge, textile borders and original lacquer. Screen depicts swaying, bountiful clusters of flowering chrysanthemums growing along the banks of a stream. Hills and clouds are visible in the distance. Dates to the first half if the Edo period 1600-1750. Reminiscent of works by Kano Shigenobu, first half of 17th century. Measures: 126" x 50" x 1" each panel: 21 1/4" W Byobu popularity grew throughout the Azuchi–Momoyama period (1568–1600) and Edo period (1600–1868). Byobu adorned samurai residences, conveying high rank and demonstrating wealth and power. This led to radical changes in byobu crafting, such as backgrounds made from gold leaf (??, kinpaku) and highly colorful paintings depicting nature and scenes from daily life, a style pioneered by the Kano school, as seen here. Rinpa School artists worked in various formats, notably screens, fans and hanging scrolls, woodblock printed books, lacquerware, ceramics, and kimono textiles. Subject matter and style were often borrowed from Heian period traditions of yamato-e, with elements from Muromachi ink paintings, Chinese Ming dynasty flower-and-bird paintings, as well as Momoyama-period Kano school developments. The traditional painting in the ’Rinpa style’ involves simple natural subjects such as birds, plants and flowers, with the background filled in with gold leaf. Emphasis on refined design and technique became more pronounced as the Rinpa style developed. The Rinpa style flourished in Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka, i.e., the political and cultural triangle of ancient Japan. Kyoto and Osaka were also two of the most important cities of the Nanga (?? "Southern painting"), also known as Bunjinga (??? "literati painting") school's style; Nanga painting was therefore exposed to the influence of Rinpa painting and vice versa.

Pines and Cranes Anonymous. Kyoto Kano School. Late 17th/early 18th centuries, circa 1700. Pair of six-panel Japanese folding screens. Ink, gofun, pigment and gold leaf on paper. This bold composition presents two pine trees extending to the left and right across a gold leaf background. One tree is silhouetted against a green ground, golden clouds obscuring its true size, the other stretches across a stylized waterway. The pines are paired with Manchurian cranes with red crests and snow white plumage. Both have been highly auspicious motifs in East Asia since Chinese antiquity. Here the artist utilized fluid and instinctive ink brushstrokes to define the trunk, branches and tail feathers, in strong contrast to the precision and sharp angularity of the crane’s legs and beaks. The adoption of this vast metallic painting support required an unerring sense of design and composition, so that the negative space surrounding motifs could imply context for the otherwise floating pictorial elements. The brushwork detailing the trunks of the pines, the exaggerated dimensions of the pine trees and the strength and dynamism of the composition are all reminiscent of Kano Eitoku...
