About the Item

Jacques Liozu Magazine Rack with Whimsical Silk Screened Maps, Paris, France, 1950s. This is a very special and rare 1950s magazine rack in silk-screened metal with whimsical maps of Australia, Oceania and Asia made by French artist Jacques Liozu. A true modernist design and a very fascinating conversation piece due to the funny and also historically interesting maps on both sides. The frenchman Jacques Liozu (1910-1974) was a painter and illustrator and became known for his wonderfully detailed pictorial maps. These maps were full of wit and beautifully painted with many intricate details and funny jokes - in this particular map of Australia we see a kangaroo who punches a man and one who gets hit by his own boomerang. In the Asian map you'll see a man who tries to move his unwilling camel and a man on a flying carpet. Please also note the countries which no longer exist, like French Indochine and East-Pakistan which tell a story about colonial times and shifting borders during the 20th century. The maps are really beautiful and well drawn, although in a naive 1950s way - because you also could also say these scenes are rather stereotypical in hindsight. The magazine rack itself is also very beautifully designed - with strong lines and subtle touches like the round feet and the circular handle. The stone-red inside is a very nice contrast with the colorful maps on both sides. A great modernist design which will be a wonderful addition to any stylish interior. And due to the interesting nature of this rack it will be a true conversation piece. It comes in a very original condition with war consistent with age and use - and a wonderful patina. About ORNAMENTUM ORNAMENTUM - where we find perfection in imperfection, love a good patina and are always on the lookout for wonderful and unique pieces both vintage and antique. We are based in Belgium near the Dutch border.
