Mahogany Georgian Boat Shaped Canterbury
About the Item
A very good quality George III Period Mahogany
boat shaped Canterbury having one drawer To
Frieze with replacement brass knobs raised on
elegant square tapered legs with
original brass castors
(It is widely believed that canterburies are named as
such due to the first object of this design being commissioned
by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the late 18th century.
Although the original format is believed to have had divisions
in both directions with the purpose of holding cutlery for the
dining room, things soon progressed and they started being
manufactured mainly for the storage of sheet music. In modern
times of course a Canterbury makes the perfect vehicle for
storage of newspapers and magazines. This particular Canterbury
is a most elegant example featuring good quality construction.
Another nice feature is the “boat shaped” design and
the retention of its original brass castors.).
