About the Item

Handwoven umbrella stand in rattan in the style of Louis Sognot. Large size, tall piece in excellent original condition. A wonderful example of midcentury artisanal work, where bamboo and rattan are perfectly blended and shaped. Louis Sognot (1892-1970) was a French designer best known for his elegant furniture made from a combination of rattan and wood. Influenced by Art Deco and Cubist aesthetics, Sognot studied at the École Bernard-Pablissy before working as a designer at the Au Printemps department store in Paris in 1919. He later went on to become a founding member of the Union des Artistes Decoroteurs. Another designer who championed the use of rattan was Franco Albini. Franco Albini (17 October 1905 – 1 November 1977) was an Italian Neo-Rationalist architect, designer and university instructor in design. He studied at the Politecnico di Milano University in 1929 and began his professional career working for Gio Ponti. Through his design work, he merged Italian traditional artisanship with Modern forms and shapes, using natural, inexpensive materials, elevating them in an incredibly sophisticated manner.
